List of disinfectants and disinfection procedures tested and approved by the Robert Koch-Institute

In Germany in the case of officially ordered decontaminations, § 18 of the Federal Law on the Prevention of Infectious Diseases in Humans (IfSG) regulates that only measures and procedures may be used, which have been

  • tested for their efficacy by the Robert Koch-Institute (RKI),
  • tested for their efficacy by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM),
  • tested for health and environment friendliness by the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) and
  • registered in a list.

This list is published in the ‘Bundesgesundheitsblatt’.
The RKI list distinguishes two effect areas:

  • Effect area A proves efficacy against bacteria and fungi. Products with this spectrum of effect should for example be used for officially ordered decontaminations in case of salmonella, listeria or MRSA epidemics.
  • Effect area B proves the product’s virucidal activity. Agents with this spectrum of effect should for example be used for officially ordered decontaminations in case of norovirus outbreaks.
  • Effect area C proves the ability to kill spores of the anthrax pathogen.
  • Products listed in effect area D should be used for killing spores of gas edema and tetanus pathogens.
