Semmelweis-Research Prize:
The international jury starts the survey
The application deadline for the Ignaz-Philipp-Semmelweis-Research Prize ran out last week. Up to and including September 30, 2007 scientists could apply for the joint scientific award of the German Association of Hospital Hygiene (DGKH) and BODE Chemie.

8th International BODE
Hygiene Days in Tallinn
At the invitation of BODE Chemie, leading international experts in hygiene participated in the 8th International Hygiene Days, which took place in Tallinn, Estonia’s capital, from June 14 – 17. The focus: New global strategies for the infection prevention and quality assurance. For the eighth time, BODE succeeded in initiating a unique discussion platform with international opinion leaders in hygiene and infection prevention.

Semmelweis-Research Prize 2008
Application deadline is September 30, 2007
In order to record innovative achievements in applied infection prevention, the German Association of Hospital Hygiene (DGKH) and BODE Chemie jointly award the biannual Ignaz-Philipp-Semmelweis-Research Prize. Applications for this international prize endowed with 15,000 EUR are accepted until September 30, 2007.

Korsolex® PAA / PAA-Aktivator is a new disinfectant, which is destined for the manual reprocessing of instruments and features sporicidal and virucidal activity within short exposure times. Being based on peracetic acid, this product is suitable for the manual disinfection of flexible endoscopes and other heat-sensitive and heat-resistant instruments. Influenza in Germany
After Southern Europe (Spain, Portugal, and Italy) and Western Europe (France, Belgium, and Switzerland) the annual wave of influenza has now reached Germany. According to the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Influenza (AGI, Influenza Working Committee) of the Robert Koch-Institute the number of people coming down with influenza increased considerably during the last couple of days.

Avian influenza: risk not yet averted
After recent outbreaks among poultry in the UK and Turkey , and in view of migratory bird movements, it cannot be totally ruled out that poultry might contract avian influenza – also in Germany. For humans the risk of an infection via contact with infected birds is low but has to be taken seriously.

Europe-wide increase in norovirus infections
According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) the number of norovirus outbreaks rises greatly in Europe. National health authorities of 9 European countries, including Hungary, UK, the Netherlands, and the Scandinavian countries, reported on a significant increase in norovirus infections over the past two months.
